12/23/05 Piano

12/23/2005 LETTER TO JENNIFER DAVIS MAST (FRIEND FROM HIGH SCHOOL)

I have an old out of tune piano from around the 1920's sometime. I used to
know but have long since forgotten.  I could take the piano apart to find
out, but am not that ambitious!  It was an ugly old beast - an upright grand
- and a bear to move.  When it crossed the threshold of our latest home my
husband said -- if we ever sell this house the piano is going with it!  (We
were fortunate enough that when we originally purchased it the guy wanted it
out of his house so bad he delivered it for free -- and he had some piano
mover equipment).

I was able to take apart the piano and remove the original panels and
recover them.  The first time I did it in a maroon velvet and the second
time a dark material.  It looked SO much better after it's $10 makeover.  I
think I liked the velvet better but I couldn't find any more of that
material cheap when I went to redo again last year.  I thought I had a
picture on my computer here at work but haven't been able to locate it.
I'll try to send it to you later, if you are interested.

Anyway - I love my piano and have spent hours enjoying playing the out of
tune old beast - I have never had it tuned.  And I have improved quite a bit
having my own beast to pound on too.  I hope you also enjoy yours!

(Do you have lots of sheet music to play?)

Glad your piano finally made it home to you, Merry Christmas!

10/11/05 Anniversary, Webelos Day camp & mice

Andrew Shopinski, Dallas Griffin, Colton Turner and Ryan Del Toror
Arrow of Light Ceremony
10/11/2005 Letter to Becky

Things are crazy as usual.
Yesterday I had off – Columbus Day – had a nice day.  I did some laundry and house stuff but nothing too serious!  Mostly just hung out with Andy and the girls and had a nice day.

Andy and I had a nice Anniversary get-away last Wednesday.  Andy’s parents came and watched the kids from 1 p.m. – 9 p.m. and we went to Mesquite and got a room and had a buffet and went swimming and then went home.  Would have been nice to stay over night but it is TOO much hassle at this stage.

Webelos Day Camp, Dallas Griffin middle

Saturday was Webelos Day camp.  It was pretty cool.  They had 6 stations where they did requirements.  They had a science rotation, made catapults, did art work, learned how to use a knife and build a fire, rope tying and compass use.  They had a catered lunch that was awesome – shredded beef sandwiches, dutch oven potatoes, salad and peach cobbler.

Sunday I substituted for Nursery.  The kids were all very good.  Only had 1 escape and 1 poopie diaper.
This week there is R.S. dinner tonight, AJ has a football game in Cedar City tomorrow – me and the kids will go to Grandma’s all afternoon and help them paint their fence. Thursday is scouts – we are going to the dino Museum and Andy works Thursday night doing a game and then it’s weekend again!

I am sitting in on interviews for our new police department staff all morning tomorrow.

On and on it goes!

Arrow of light award
Josh Bowles, Andrew Shopinski and Dallas Griffin
Oh yea and we have/had mice…eeeeek!  We caught 4 last week.  We found a hole in the wall that they were coming in through that hopefully closing off will eliminate any future mice.  I had the pleasure of seeing 2 of them running across my floor.  I squealed both times.   I HATE MICE!!!!  Almost makes me wish I had a cat…NOT!

I am walking MWF with our neighbor that has twins that are 1.  We go from 6:10 to 6:50 – after I take AJ to school and before her husband leaves for work – no kids.  It is nice.  I just hope that as it gets colder we don’t both wus out.  I don’t like the cold weather and she can’t go any later…We’ve been doing about 2 miles at a time – I think…I have to measure our route for sure.

10/05/05 Update on the family to Jennifer Davis Mast

10/5/2005 LETTER TO JENNIFER MAST (FRIEND FROM HIGH SCHOOL)

Hey - Good to hear from you.  It is interesting to read about your life and
realize how different our lives our.  You in your cold winter laden climate,
me in my hot never see a drop of snow climate.  You with your 1 quiet boy
with a life of solitude.  Me with my 5 wild banshees - I don't believe I
remember what quiet or solitude is?!?  I think we both have enviable
situations!!!

Things here are good.  Everyone is healthy and happy and extremely busy.

Andy broadcasting basketball game at Dixie State
Andy - is enjoying sports broadcasting and writing for the Deseret News and
the Daily Spectrum.  He started an internet broadcasting web site this year
(utahpreps.net) and broadcasts all the local high school's football games on
the web site.  You can go online and listen to him if you are interested -
they archive all the games.  He also does a 10 minute sports talk show on
the local TV station.  In his spare time he is a stay at home daddy and does
excellent with that!  He has been Sunday School president for a couple of
years but we have been told his reign there is about over.

We are lucky that our schedules mesh and we don't ever need day care.  I am
still working in my growing court as Clerk of the Court.  I love my job.
The city manager has asked me to consider more lucrative positions within
the city but it would involve working for a boss that is actually here (mine
comes in once a week for about 2 hours - all of which we spend together in
court) and politics.  He never criticizes my work or hovers or anything.   I
enjoy the mix of working with the public and working with paper.  My job
always has a new and interesting story.  And yes, they are always GUILTY!

Aj in football uniform for PVHS
AJ is now 14 and just finished his first year on the freshman football team.
Their team went undefeated and he really enjoyed being part of the team.  He
committed to going to school 3X a week at 6 a.m. to lift weights and staying
after school 3 days a week for 2 hour practices.  The 4th day of the week
they have their football games. He is kind of becoming a health nut and has
really shot up and slimmed down lately.  He just completed his Eagle Scout
in Boy Scouts and will get that awarded to him soon.  He got done 4 days
before his 14th birthday - he was very proud of being able to accomplish
that at such a young age.  He has been a very gifted student getting mostly
A's (Geometry he got a B+ I think).  As long as we keep him busy with no
time to tease his brothers he is a fine young man.

Andrew Shopinski and Dallas helping with AJ's Eagle project
Dallas is 10 and is in the 5th grade.  He is on the safety squad at school -
the guys in the orange jackets that help direct traffic.  He joined the
reading club and has to read a book every 10 days and then a group of kids
and a teacher discuss it.  He just finished his Arrow of Light for Cub
Scouts and will complete all of the Webelos requirements by his birthday in
March.  He is a real sweetie and the child I could not do without.  He is
always asking what he can do to help.  He gets his sisters dressed on
Sunday's, changes diapers, helps make food, cleans, does yard work etc.  He
is my little life saver!

Bryce with a graham cracker creation
Bryce is 9 and in the 4th grade.  He is extremely energetic and busy but
very smart also.  He gets bored easily because he "gets it" the first time
and then gets impatient while every one else "gets it" -- if you know what I
mean.  He can look at spelling words once or twice and know how to spell
them without effort.  He is also doing scouting and has belt loops and pins
like crazy and just recently finished his BEAR badge.  I feel bad for him
because since I am the "cub scout leader" he has been through the program
over and over again but he is not the right age to receive the awards.  So
in order for him to complete it he has to do everything again next year that
brother and he did last year.

I've been the cub scout leader of the wolfs, bears and/or webelos for almost
10 years now - off and on.  I think in our current ward it is going on 4
years.  My pack of boys are highly decorated and we have a good time.  I
really like doing scouts because I don't have to do anything on Sunday.  And
believe me Sunday mornings are crazy busy at our house.
Holly and Katie enjoying the backyard

Bryce and Katie looking cute!
Katie is 3 (4 at Christmas time) and absolutely full of it.  She loves to
change clothes and "dress up".  I have to keep the majority of her stuff
under lock and key or her room will be dumped every day.  I leave out a
basket of stuff to let her play in but lock up all other clothes.  She
recently was given a ballet outfit.  She wore if for 4 days straight.  Andy
would dress her in the morning and an hour or so later she'd come out in her
pink suit.  I finally got it off of her on Saturday and washed it and she
begged for it back for 2 days.  She got up in Sacrament Meeting and said her
one liner last week and did a really cute job.

Into mom's lipstick!
Look these shoes are BIG!

Ugh...read myself to sleep!

Isn't this where the potty chair goes?
Holly is 1 (2 around Christmas time) and we call her TAZ - short for
Tasmanian Devil.  That child is a tornado.  She has drawn on every wall in
our house, the fridge, the carpet, our pillows, herself (she looks like she
is covered in tattoos most days) and on and on.  And somehow she seems to
always find the sharpie permanent markers.  It seems like no matter how many
markers I pick up and "put away" she always finds one more.  I am sure she
will be an artist like you one day as art seems to be her thing.  She is
also a climber.  I had to get rid of her crib at 18 months because she kept
throwing herself out of it.  She will get the kitchen bar stool and push it
to wherever she wants to go.  She gets stuff off the top of the fridge.  She
can open all the child safety locks (lock on the fridge - useless, the
cupboards - she's quicker than we are.  The locks to keep the door shut -
you guessed it - she can get those off the door and get out of the room).
She has also opened the locked front door and gone and got in the car
without us knowing.  She can unpick the fence locks.  It's a good thing she
is the caboose!  And she is adorable.   I don't know that I could do this
again!

Holly and Katie...my lil prisoners!

It was fun to hear an update of your life.  It sounds beautiful where you
live.  You know -- if we were smart -- we'd have a summer home where you
live and a winter home here.  Our weather is breathtakingly beautiful 9
months of the year.  And then so hot you wish you were dead through the
summer.  You should send me some pictures of your scenery there and your
house and Hayden and you.  It's been awhile since you've sent any out.

I'm glad you are doing well.  I hope I didn't bore you with my update.
Someday I hope to have a quiet moment and explore my artistic side (I'm not
sure I have one).

Family Updates - Becky just moved to a bigger house a little closer to SLC -
saves us maybe 20-30 minutes drive - she lives about 5 hours from us.  She
is busy with her 5 kids.  We don't get together often due to the large
amounts of loud children and the distance between us.  Although we love to
get together whenever we can.

Ruth is pregnant with #2 and final.  She says.  Probably true.  She is more
into her career than mothering. She has a full-time live in nanny already.
And a house keeper.  What a life, eh?  She already had her masters and is
just completing a nursing degree now or something like that.  I don't really
understand the need to be gone ALL THE TIME.  Work 40 hours and then school
20 hours or whatever it turns out to be.  I prefer to get my hours in and
then spend every minute with my family after that.  Whatever.  We are
different!!!!

My dad is keeping busy taking Spanish classes and dance classes and going to
the gym and working on his house.  I think he is dating a little too.  It
will be interesting to see what path he chooses!

Well I am glad you are all healthy and happy and doing well.  I love to hear
from my friends that I have had over the years -- I have so many people I
really enjoy but distance and circumstance make it impossible to be part of
their lives anymore.  Plus the truth of the matter is I am too busy to have
friends now!  There are people that live right here that I don't spend time
with due to the nature of LIFE!

Take care and write again soon!  Shelly

04/06/05 Morgan Chase's Quilt Story, Threads of Compassion

4/6/2005 MORGAN’S PERSPECTIVE ON GRANDMA’S QUILT STORY BY BECKY CHASE

Kids with their Grandma's quilts!

                                          Threads of Compassion

I have fond memories of my grandma Laurito. From the time I was tiny I
learned to call her "The Jelly Bean" grandma because whenever grandma
came to visit, she came with a bag full of jelly beans. Jelly beans were
always on the counter in her kitchen and in the backseat of her car. The
only thing better than a grandma that loves jelly beans is a grandma that
loves to share her jelly beans. And boy did grandma love to share!
Grandma and grandpa Laurito didn't live near my family until three years
before grandma my died. They had lived in NJ for more than 30 years but
that was too far away from their children and grandchildren in Utah so
they finally packed up and moved out. I was so excited. I loved visiting
with them. A trip to grandma's house meant swimming in the pool, playing
dress-up in grandma's old hats and dresses, playing with mom's old toys,
and eating all the candy we could get our hands on, which of course,
included jelly beans!

I remember when Mom told me that grandma wasn't feeling well. I thought
that she was sick and would get better. But Mom explained that grandma
probably wouldn't get better. Something called cancer was destroying
grandma's body and making her very sick. Soon, Mom said, the cancer would
take grandma's life and she would go to live with Heavenly Father. That
made me so sad. I didn't want grandma to go anywhere. From then on I
treated grandma a little differently. I drew special pictures for her so
she'd know how much I loved her; I rubbed her back for her when she
wasn't feeling well; and I hugged her tighter and longer when it was time
to say good-bye.

I remember one night, several months before grandma died, she fell
outside my house as she and grandpa were trying to go home. I ran to help
grandma but she was just lying in the street. It scared me. Grandma had
broken her nose and scraped her arms and her face. All I could do was hug
her. But I know she appreciated it. I realized that grandma really was
fragile and maybe Mom was right about grandma not being with us for much
longer.

But as sick as grandma was, I noticed that she tried hard not to seem
sick. Grandma had learned to quilt recently and wanted to make a special
quilt for each of her eleven grandchildren. When she started the quilt,
and during the months she worked on them, she was was sure she could
finish. Every time grandma came to visit, she now brought quilting fabric
instead of jelly beans. Every time we went to visit her, she would show
us how much progress she had made on the quilts. By the time grandma
finished the first quilt top, great sisters in the ward had learned of
her new project. One sister came and set up a quilting frame in grandma's
living room so Mom and her sisters could tie the quilt. The frame took up
half the living room and it was fun to play with my cousins under the
quilt as my mom and my aunts tied it. Meanwhile, grandma sat and
continued quilting. She seemed more weak with every stitch, but she was
determined to give a quilt to each grandchild.

The sisters in her ward were in constant communication with grandma so
they saw how her declined as well. Grandma was able to finish the quilt
tops for all 6 boys before the sisters came and took the quilts, telling
grandma they would quilt them for her. Shortly after, the sisters came
back and took grandma's fabric for her five granddaughters' quilts and
promised they would start and finish those quilts for her. Grandma called
my mom and told her how pleased she was that the sisters were going to
finish the quilts for her. She felt so relieved. Grandma could hardly
speak to Mom that day but the words she did speak were praises of the
sisters in her ward who did so much to help her.

Two days later grandma Laurito passed away. In all our sorrow came
another bright ray from the sisters of grandma's ward. As they surrounded
our family that day and continued to serve us, they then promised to have
all five quilts for the granddaughters' completed and on display for
grandma's funeral later that week. They had not even started the girls
quilts yet. More than 50 sisters met that week to finish the quilts that
were so important to my grandma.

Kids' with their Grandma's quilts

In as much as ye have done it unto the least of these...ye have done it
unto me.

I hope we never forget the example of love and compassion that was shown
to our grandma and to us. And that we too will share the love and
compassion that was shared with us.

As we left the funeral, each of her eleven grandchildren was able to take
home a quilt, hand-made, with love, by grandma and the sisters in her
ward. And that night, each grandchild slept wrapped, not only in
grandma's quilt, but wrapped in grandma's love.

04/01/05 Letter from Rod & Jean on Mission

LETTER FROM ROD AND JEAN GRIFFIN 4/1/2005

Hi Shelly:
I guess that by now you're up and moving and about ready to head out to work.   You work so hard and do well in all you do.  We love you!

I've been thinking about you and wondering how you're doing?  I know it must be hard not having your mom to talk to.  We hope that you're handling the mourning process okay and you're dealing with as it needs to be done.  Losing one's mom is hard -- there is no one in the world that loves you quite like your mom.

I guess spring has really sprung there and you've already been out in your yard doing things that need doing.  Just think -- 3 more months and Millie will be out of your yard!   Yahoo!!
We so appreciate your sacrifices for our mission -- taking care of Millie is one and the money you've sent to us is another.  We couldn't have made it without your help!  And your prayers!
Anyway, just wanted to say hi and let you know that we love you!

Its Friday and another weekend is upon us.  Conference weekend.  We're driving up to Freehold to inspect 3 missionary apartments this morning and have appointments this afternoon and a class this evening.  Being busy is the cement that holds the mission together.  Makes the time fly by and teaching and preaching increases our testimonies.

Tomorrow we'll have a meeting before the conference sessions and then watch all 3 sessions at the chapel, same on Sunday.  (two sessions, though).  We'll come away spiritually refreshed when conference is all over.

Have a great day and know that we love and appreciate you and Andy.

Love, Mom
